Jenny McCarthy is a moron.

[Time:] Your collaborator recommends that parents accept only the haemophilus influenzae type B (HIB) and tetanus vaccine for newborns and then think about the rest. Not polio? What about the polio clusters in unvaccinated communities like the Amish in the U.S.? What about the 2004 outbreak that swept across Africa and Southeast Asia after a single province in northern Nigeria banned vaccines?
[McCarthy:] I do believe sadly it’s going to take some diseases coming back to realize that we need to change and develop vaccines that are safe. If the vaccine companies are not listening to us, it’s their fucking fault that the diseases are coming back. They’re making a product that’s shit. If you give us a safe vaccine, we’ll use it. It shouldn’t be polio versus autism.

This woman is dangerous. Unfortunately, people listen to her and Oprah. Their children suffer as a consequence but more importantly, immunocompromised children and children who are too young to get vaccines are dying because of their stupidity.

A new site has been set up to keep track of the number of people she is responsible for killing and injuring. Jenny McCarthy Body Count uses the weekly data from the CDC on illnesses and deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases. It’s truly sad.

Jenny McCarthy Body Count

Another site has been set up to Stop Jenny McCarthy. It exposes her lies about autism and vaccines.

Update: Larry King is an even bigger moron

It looks like Larry King is going to pander to that idiot:

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy get serious about autism! She says her son has “recovered” from the condition that affects millions. But many medical experts say there is no cure. Questions and answers from guests on both sides of the controversy.

There is no controversy. There is a manufactroversy where people who have a new book out conspire with television hosts to pimp each other.

Teaching math through the generations.

I found an old e-mail printout of this from 2002 and updated it.

Teaching Math in 1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1960: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1970: A logger exchanges a set “L” of lumber for a set “M” of money. The cardinality of set “M” is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set “M”. The set “C,” the cost of production contains 20 fewer points than set “M”. Represent the set “C” as subset of set “M” and answer the following question: What is the cardinality of the set “P” of profits?

Teaching Math in 1980: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math in 1990: By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the forest birds and squirrels “feel” as the logger cut down the trees? There are no wrong answers. You may cry if you want.

Teaching Math in 2000: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $120. How does Arthur Andersen determine that his profit margin is $60?

Teaching Math in 2010: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $120. The federal government bails out his firm. How much is his bonus?

Teaching Math in 2020: El hachero vende un camion carga por $100. La cuesta de production es $20. ¿Que es las ganancias?

The Economy

An Old One

Mild Recession – You hear about people being unemployed.
Recession – You know people who are unemployed.
Depression – You are unemployed.

Economist jokes

Why did Harry Truman prefer one-armed economists.
Because they couldn’t say “On the other hand.”
How do you get a one-armed economist out of a tree?
Wave at them.
An economist is someone who chases a black cat in a dark room.
An economic theorist chases a black cat in a dark room and the cat isn’t there.
An econometrician chases a black cat in a dark room, the cat isn’t there, and he shouts “I’ve got it.”

Quotes

I’m not sure what the question was, but the answer is stabilize the money supply

Milton Friedman

Economists must have a sense of humor if they can predict the the growth of GDP to a 1/10th of a percent.

John Scarry

The safest way to double your money is to fold it over once and put it in your pocket.
