Cheap at half the price

Nothing could be better than all this free advice.
Nothing could be better, it’s cheap at half the price.
I don’t need more wisdom, I can’t even take the truth.
I just have this longing to recover some of my youth.

It wasn’t any better, oh most certainly not.
It’s that getting older, limits what I’ve got.
I used to have a future to do with what I might.
I swore it wouldn’t get me, at least without a fight.
Now looking to the future, it’s shorter than the past.
And now that I am older, I don’t change as fast.

Nothing could be better than all this free advice.
Nothing could be better, it’s cheap at half the price.
I don’t need more wisdom, I can’t even take the truth.
I’d just like to find out what I did with all my youth.

I’m dreaming of the changes that I can make in me.
But I’m starting from a place I said I’d never be.
I used to think that what I’d do was educate my mind.
I used to think and talk and see what I could find.
I found this car, this house, this job, all of it is mine.
So why is it that all I do is bitch and moan and whine.

Nothing could be better than all this free advice.
Nothing could be better, it’s cheap at half the price.
I don’t need more wisdom, I can’t even take the truth.
I’d like to question what I am without seeming so uncouth.

I made my choice. I made my life. It wasn’t just a trick.
I still have a future, but only if I grab it quick.
But now and then I set aside some time to just reflect.
On all the choices that remain and what I can select.
The future lies ahead of me, the past I cannot save.
And still I have a life, at least up ’til the grave.

And nothing could be better than all this free advice.
Nothing could be finer, it’s cheap at half the price.
I don’t need more wisdom, I can’t even take the truth.
I’ve made my choice. I’ve made my life. I’m no idle youth.

We did OK, though not the best and at times we felt some pain.
But now we’ve learned and seen and felt—it was not all in vain.
If I could start over and do it all once more
it would all be different—I already know the score.
And with each new choice I make, I swear I won’t look back.
I cannot bear to know, how far I’m off the track.

For nothing could be better than all this free advice.
Nothing could be finer, it’s cheap at half the price.
So here’s my word of wisdom. I know it’s not a lot.
Don’t waste a single minute because that’s all you’ve got.
